Sony Aino: PS3 Access

More details have arisen about the Sony Ericsson Aino cell phone that will have some PS3 integration embedded in it. It's not the "PSP phone" that people keep talking about and hoping for, and to be honest, it seems to lack a lot of what people might have been hoping for.

In a Q&A with the Euro PS blog, Sony Ericsson's Lisa Canning dished on some highlights, and lowlights.

No surprise, no UMD support. Did we ever expect it? Also, while you will be able to use Remote Play to connect and control the PS3's XMB through the Internet, you won't be able to play PS1 games as you can on the PSP.

To access Remote Play, select the Remote Play icon in the entertainment menu of their Aino. The PS3 generates a one-time registration code to be entered into the Aino.

Apple Confirms Rock-and-Roll Themed Event

As expected, Apple is holding a music-themed event on Sept. 9th. Also as expected, it's going to be held at 10 AM at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, which is next door to Moscone Center, where Apple holds WWDC annually.

As normal, Apple is very close-mouthed about the event, but the company is expected to launch new iPods and iPod Touches. Apple is also expected to discuss its new interactive album format, known as Cocktail.

Finally, there is suspicion that the Sept. 9th date means a collaborative announcement with The Beatles might be in the offing. Sept. 9th is the day that The Beatles' Rock Band title launches, as well as the day The Beatles' remastered digital albums will be first available.

Apple Exploding iPhones Not Our Fault

An Apple investigation after reports of exploding iPhones in France has, turned up no underlying flaws in the device, according to the company.

Apple said was that there haven't been any reports of battery overheating, but that

all of the handsets they had seen with broken screens were caused by an "external force." The statement issued by the company was:

"To date, there are no confirmed battery overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits. The iPhones with broken glass that we have analysed to date show that in all cases the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone."

The French report I previously wrote about sounded more like a hand grenade, with the phone hissing before the screen suddenly broke, sending shards flying.

Additionally, Frank Benoiton, of Acheres-la-Foret in France, told AP that his wife's iPhone had cracked without warning last week and that "It was not dropped and experienced no unusual shock."

French watchdog DGCCRF was prompted to investigate the complaints by the recent incidents. Meanwhile, the European Commission issued an alert to its 27 member states using its Rapex system which is the EU rapid alert system for "dangerous" consumer products.

On Thursday, Nokia unveiled its first phone using a Linux OS. The N900 uses Nokia's Linux-based Maemo OS, but for the first time in an actual cell phone as opposed to an Internet Tablet that requires wi-fi or cell phone pairing.

The N900 runs Nokia's new Maemo 5 software. Nokia makes sure to emphasize the device's ability to run "dozens of applications simultaneously." Size-wise, it compares favorably with the iPhone 3GS, at 110.9 mm x 59.8 mm x 18 mm vs. 115.5 mm x 62.1 mm x 12.3 mm. Yes, yes, it loses out by about 50% in the thickness category, but otherwise, it's pretty similar. Why that extra thickness? A slide-out QWERTY keyboard, of course.

Unlike other recent smartphones (Android, iPhone, Pre) the N900 uses a Mozilla-based browser, instead of a Webkit-based one. The N900 has a TFT 3.5" resistive touchscreen, with 16M colors, 800 x 480.

Additional specs: 32GB of storage, with microSD card expansion, and a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. Also, A-GPS, an FM receiver / transmitter, compass, accelerometer and up to 9 hours of talk time (emphasis on the "up to").

Clearly, Nokia wants this to be an iPhone killer, but what it doesn't have, naturally, is the App Store.

Apple iPhone Deal with Chinese Telecom

The long-awaited entry of the iPhone to China, at least in non-jailbroken and non-unlocked form, is at the brink, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news. China Unicom plans to start selling two versions of the iPhone in the fourth quarter, under a three-year deal.

China Unicom is the second-largest wireless carrier in China, but it has less than 1/3 the number of subscribers as China Mobile (CMCC). Still, China Unicom had 141 million wireless users at the end of July. There is reportedly no revenue sharing in the deal.

China Unicom also said on Friday that its 3G network will launch commercially on Sept. 28th, just in time to be overloaded, similar to AT&T, by the iPhone. Of course, the iPhone has already been "imported" into China in large numbers by those buying the device in supported countries and returning to the country.

As expected, and in accordance with Chinese regulations, the iPhone will be sold with their wi-fi functionality disabled. Given this, one would expect the aforementioned "grey market" of imported iPhones to continue to exist. Research firm BDA China estimates there are as many as 1.5 million iPhones already in use in China.

China is, without a doubt, a country associated with piracy of many types. It will be interesting to see how many of these phones are jailbroken. It is unclear exactly when the iPhone will launch, aside from Q4, or what pricing will be.

Yes the images from the CMOS sensor are very impressive indeed especially given its physical dimensions but any camera with such a small sensor and lens is going to struggle in low light situations and this one is no different.
This camera records AVCHD footage straight to a memory stick DUO. The 4gb one provided will accommodate about 30 mins worth on the highest settings, which comes in at around about 16 megs per second, its not surprising given the cameras 1080i HD output but it does mean that realistically you will need to shell out for a much bigger memory card.
Charging the camera is a sinch thanks to the included docking station which also allows you to pump a non-hd (composite) signal to your TV. The camera charged quickly and thanks to infolithium you can expect around about 90 mins use from a full battery. This seems a little on the light side considering there are very few motors to be driven inside but with the chore taken out of charging it is handy knowing that it only needs to be returned to its dock after each shoot.
The zoom wheel can easily confused with the mode wheel at first but the camera responds very quickly to commands so even incorrectly altering functions wasn’t too frustrating. The camera is also very well built with its Titanium casing and the weight feels just right. there’s so much positivity which simply oozes out of your tactile experiences with this wonderfully constructed piece of equipment.
You see technology aside, there’s something very liberating about an instant-on, rugged, compact HD camcorder which cuts out the hasstle and fuss which can sometimes put people off from taking their camcorders out with them in the first place, and again for this reason, the TG3E is right at the top.
5.1 Dolby Digital recording and a workflow which importantly supports both PC and MAC (Intel ones only, with Leopard too) which is incredibly often overlooked. the TG3E supports the AVCHD format which means that both PC’s and MAC’S are equally compatible for a change so you have no excuses for creating some top class videos for the internet or DVD.
In closing, this is a very capable camera which feels especially useful and exciting to use, mainly due to its small size. With decent light, you’ll enjoy vivid colours and sharp details which are comparable to any HD consumer camera on the market so if your wallet can take the whack, you should buy this camera but whatever you do, never leave it at home!
